So Cafe Bookings - Wednesday 24th April 2024It was a massive week for the Sorrento beach competitors at Surf Life Saving Australia National Championships. Here is the wrap thanks to Aaron Bell.
Kicking off - on what will forever be remembered as the longest Saturday in the history of Beach Events (almost 12 hours of competition) - the Youth events, we had the following results:
SPRINTS
U13 Female Beach Sprint - Semi-finalists:
Ella Ireland
Aliyah Plint
Evie Spratt
U13 Male Beach Sprint - Finalist
Kai Barrett - 4th (by a whisker)
U14 Female Beach Sprint - Quarter Finalist
Emma Paice
U14 Male Beach Sprint - Quarter Finalists
Hayden Sadler
Eamon Stott
U15 Female Beach Sprint - Quarter Finalist
Jaydn Buckley
U15 Female Beach Sprint - Finalist
Lilli Yujnovich - 5th (4th due to an international competitor)
After some fantastic sprinting, our Youth athletes shifted their sights onto the Beach Relays.
RELAYS
U14/15 Female Relay - BRONZE
Lilli Yujnovich
Jaydn Buckley
Indi Plint
Dylan Begley
After cruising their way through the heats, the girls came out strong, with Lilli, JJ and Indi setting up the final leg of the relay to be a cracker. With a slight mishap and one of the slickest baton pick ups ever seen, Dylan came storming home to hold off some fast finishing sprinters to earn our first medal of the carnival - BRONZE. Awesome work ladies!
U13/14 Mixed Relay - BRONZE
Emma Paice
Aliyah Plint
Kai Barrett
Brodie Bell
This was a race for the ages with Emma, Ali and Kai putting the team into a great position in the first three legs, Brodie stormed home to help secure a second BRONZE medal for the night. Awesome work team!
U14/15 Mixed Beach Relay - 5th
Lilli Yujnovich
Jaydn Buckley
Hayden Sadler
Eamon Stott
That concluded Day One of the carnival, with some very tired athletes (and some even more tired parents).
2KM BEACH RUN
U14 Male Beach Run:
Eamon Stott - 9th
Eamon proved he was as crazy as we all suspected by getting up nice and early on Day Two to run the 2km Beach Run.
FLAGS
U13 Female Beach Flags:

8th: Ella Ireland
U13 Male Beach Flags:

U14 Female Beach Flags:

After a long couple of days, the end of flags saw the conclusion of the program for our Youth Competitors. Well done to each of our Youth athletes, we are all very proud of all of your efforts.
Once the youngsters cleared the beach, it was time for our more mature competitors to hit the sand to show everyone how it’s done! Sprints and relays were the first off the rank with the following athletes having a run:
Sue Waite - Bronze
Rita Berry - 4th
Kris Hackett - 6th
Adam Young - 7th
Aaron Bell - Finalist (hamstring awareness)
Stef Yujnovich - Semi Finals (hamstring awareness)
Aran Buckley - Quarter Finals
Greg McIntosh - Quarter Finals
Following this showing our masters athletes hit the sand again for relays. Our Men’s and Women’s 200 plus teams came in with valiant 4ths. Well done to Stef, Sue, Rita, Chantel, Adam, Aran, Greg and Rich for your efforts. A special mention to Greg, Rich, Chantel and Rita for coming down from the water arenas to have a run in teams! The Sorrento Passion Poppers (Kris, Jez, John and Belly) cruised through their semi final to book a place in the hotly contested final; narrowly missing out on going back to back.
The following day saw Kris and Rita open up the Sorrento Chocky medal curse with both finishing 4th in their respective Beach Runs. Rita, John, Sue and Stef continued the trend by finishing 4th in their respective flag events!
Following the conclusion of the Masters events, the U17/U19/Open Beachies kicked off their campaign with sprints.

After another long day (and some torturous ice baths) we again shifted our attention to flags. Our U19 boys had a hard time on the beach, but flagged valiantly throughout the rounds! Our girls showed their strength in this discipline with 2 of our 4 U17 women making the final (which also had 2 other West Aussies in the final).
U17 Female Beach Flags:
Amelia Rowe - GOLD
Ava Yujnovich - 6th
Zahra Buckley - 18th
Akayla Fairclough - 30th
As with every carnival, we had some highs and some lows but each and every Beachie, that donned the Green Cap, should be extremely proud of their efforts over the week! I know your coaches, supporters and club are all extremely proud of you all! ... See MoreSee Less
These absolute legends were the SoSLSC water safety contingent at the Surf Life Saving Australia National Championships this past week on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.
Richard, Cate, Declan and Georgia volunteered to be in the IRB’s or on the JetSki for the entire championships and were out on the water well before everyone arrived and were still on the water well after everyone left.
In big swell, rain, wind and sunshine they represented SoSLC so well.

A competition as big as the Surf Life Saving Australia "Aussies" can't happen without the MASSIVE contribution of the officials who keep things moving.
Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club WA would like to thank all the WA officials who have volunteered at the "Aussies".
Without their involvement the competition doesn't happen.
