Sorrento SLSC welcomes Aunty Sharon Wood-Kenney as Club Patron

Sorrento SLSC is proud and honoured to welcome Aunty Sharon Wood-Kenney as a Patron of our club.
A proud Noongar Yamatji woman, Sharon and her family have strong cultural links to the Sorrento area and Sorrento Beach. A long-time supporter of our club, Sharon has led Acknowledgements of Country at many of our key events and guides one of our most special traditions – the Kaya Kep “Hello Water” ceremony that opens our Nipper season each year.
The Kaya Kep is a beautiful and meaningful cultural ceremony that welcomes our Nippers and families to the ocean through language, storytelling and symbolism, while recognising the deep connection between First Nations people and the sea. For our members, it has become one of the most cherished moments of the season.
In the months ahead, Sharon will be offering our members opportunities to take part in cultural immersions and tours at Sorrento and along our coastline. These experiences will explore team connection, wellbeing, leadership, self-care, two-way science, water knowledge and sustainability – creating meaningful learning opportunities for our members and teams.
You’ll often see Aunty Sharon around the club on Sundays, enjoying the beach and supporting our community. She’s always happy to have a chat with members and share her deep cultural knowledge and stories – so please take a moment to say hello when you see her.
Inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame, Sharon has made an extraordinary contribution to Western Australia through her work in sports, mental health and wellbeing, domestic violence prevention and designing award-winning programs for youth, families and Elders’ yarning circles.
We are incredibly proud to have Aunty Sharon as part of our Sorrento family and look forward to continuing our journey of cultural learning, respect and connection together.
